Gay Beaches in Spain

| 28th March 2015

Spain is another popular destination for gay tourists because it has a lot to offer. Many areas of Spain have wonderful weather all year long, fantastic atmosphere and they offer a unique experience. Barcelona and Madrid have exciting nightlife for gay tourists but the best gay beaches are listed below!

Barcelona

  • Mar Bella - The most well-known nudist and gay beach in Barcelona although it is one of the farthest beaches from the city. Still, there are plenty of bars and restaurants and the most recommended El Chiringuito de la Mar Bella (Chiringay) with events in the evenings during the season and a great range of drinks and cocktails. Take the metro to Poble Nou or Selva De Mar on the Yellow Line L4 and walk about 20 minutes or take the bus 41 and get off at Parc esportiu de la Mar Bella.

  • San Sebastià and Barceloneta - these two gay beaches are right next to each other making it a one kilometre long sandy heaven. You can find bars and restaurants there as well as parties during the evening. Barceloneta is by the Ciutadella Vila Olímpica metro stop next to the windsurfing and sailing school. San Sebastià is close to the harbour by the sky lift. Section 19 is clothing-optional.

  • Nova Icària - You’ll find both gay and straight sunbathers on this shorter but still wonderful beach close to the Marina. It’s more peaceful for those who are looking for a bit of quiet. There are quite a few bars and restaurants on the promenade just behind the beach.  Take the metro on the Yellow Line to Ciutadella Vila Olimpica.

  • Sitges - A beach town 40 minutes by train from Barcelona. You can find two gay beaches there, La Platja de la Bossa Rodona and Playa del Muerto which is a gay nudist beach. There are many gay oriented bars and restaurants. To get there easily, head towards the Atlantida nightclub and follow the coast path until you start seeing small rainbow flags.

  • Maspalomas, Gran Canaria - Gay travellers have been coming to this place for 25 years and it is still very popular. The town is well developed and offers plenty of nightlife. Even though the locals are mainly Catholic, there are absolutely no problems with being openly gay there. Most of the gay bars and restaurants are located in the area around Yumbo Centre. You can find many gay mainstream venues and men/women only bars there. The gay beach is on Maspalomas near hut 7. In May you can attend the gay pride event.

  • Platja des Cavallet, Ibiza - The official naturist beach but not only for gay tourists. As it is inside a national park the surroundings are wonderful. Chiringay is the recommended bar/restaurant located on the beach. chiringay.com You can take the bus to Ses Salines from Ibiza Town and get off at es Cavallet road and head south.

  • Cabopino, Marbella - Another place that offers sunny climate all year long. The water is very clean, the beaches are sandy and golden and the surrounding area has plenty of bars and restaurants to offer. You can rent parasols and sunbeds there and there are plenty of activities to enjoy. Playa Artola is a beach particularly popular with nudist and gay locals and tourists. Follow the N340-A7 roads from Marbella heading east. When you pass Elviria, take the exit for Cabopino and follow the signs.
