Stay Away Students!

Travel | 2nd July 2015

Naturally, there aren’t many places in Africa where you would feel safe. In Nigeria, those found guilty of homosexuality are imprisoned for three years while Senegal gives sentences of up to 5 years. In Sudan, the punishment is 100 lashes and up to 5 years imprisonment. Uganda seems horribly backwards with their “Kill the Gays” bill where citizens are given life imprisonment even for supporting the LGBT community. There’s no protection against LGBT discrimination in Morocco and there’s widespread homophobia. The Egyptian government focuses on finding and preventing any homosexual activities. Zimbabwe also persecutes gays severely.

Eastern Europe, especially Russia and Lithuania should be avoided. Russians have very homophobic views and aren’t afraid to express themselves. Also, death threats have been made in Lithuania to two gay students after they posted a photo on Facebook.

In the Americas, Jamaica and Honduras are very intolerant of the LGBT community and harsh punishments are common.

Those aren’t the only places LGBT students should worry about. If you’re part of the community or support it, you will only feel safe in certain parts of the world.
