Melbourne is often refered to as Australia's cultural centre. It is the second largest city after Sydney but has a much more European feel because of its trams, Victorian architecture and boutique hotels. December to February is Australia's summer season with the most tourists but the climate is very unpredictable any time of the year as Melbourne is known for having abrupt changes in the weather so be ready to experience all four seasons when you visit.
The city is also known for its beautiful hinterland landscape ranging from mountains, ocean scenery, rainforest to rolling farmland that will certainly make you feel content. Melbourne is also famous for its cultural events, cafe society and fine dining.
Prahran, South Yarra, St Kilda, Carlton and Collingwood are Melbourne's hip and LGBT social hubs. Prahran with its Chapel Street is known for unusual food services. Curious new venues keep popping up so you'll see something new and fresh when you go there. Carlton is filled with students from the nearby university giving it a very energetic atmosphere. There are plenty of Italian eateries on Lygon Street.
You should also visit Brunswick, Fitzroy, West Melbourne and Travancore for a more alternative experience. Fitzroy, especially on Brunswick Street has plenty of vintage clothing stores, second-hand bookshops, cafes and restaurants. Go to the Rose Street Artists Market on the weekend for hand-made items. Another hipster part of town is Brunswick in and around Sydney Road.
The annual events in Melbourne are the Chillout festival in early March, Melbourne Queer Film Festival in April, HiBearNation in June, AWOL (A Week of Leather) in August/September.
