Belgium is one of the gay-friendliest cities in the world. The gay social scene is concentrated around the city centre mainly on Rue du Marché au Charbon (or Kolenmarkt - street names are bilingual: French and Flemish).
There's a famous party that occurs every month in Belgium called La Demence.
The annual events are: the Belgian Pride in May (70 000 attended in 2012), Pink Screen Festival and the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
Dansaert is the trendy shopping and dining area along the upscale Avenue Louise.
The off-tourist track enthusiasts will find many things to explore in Brussels. There are many second-hand places like the daily flea market at Place de jeu de Balle where you can find plenty of junk but if you look long enough, treasures can be spotted. Another good place to go is the Les Petis Riens "the small nothings" with plenty of second-hand clothes. Vintage Market at Halles Saint Géry Vintage is another great place to go with vintage clothes and plenty of interesting junk, but it's only on the first Sunday of every month.
If you're into books and comics, make your way to Bortier Gallery off Rue Madeleine with affordable second-hand merchendise. The hipsters will be also spotted at the Veals and Geeks which is an indie record store in Ixelles that sometimes organizes vinyl record street fairs. A more fancy part of town is in Galleries Royal St Hubert where at Libraire d'art you can find art books and many fashionable stores with gloves and hats.
A more posh place to go to is the Magritte Museum where you can enjoy some surrealist art or go to a beer tasting at Spirit of Wallonia. Great indie films in English can be seen at intependent cinemas in Cinema Galeries or the Flagey Cinematheque.
And the slightly more conventional but still worth experiencing is a guided tour by a volunteer from Brussels who will take you to the more trendy places, check them out at visitbrussels.be.
